Meritor’s brakes are designed with the operator in mind – aiming to maximise service life and minimise the need for maintenance
Meritor is a US supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking, aftermarket and electric powertrain solutions for commercial vehicle and industrial markets.
For over 110 years the company has developed products for commercial trucks and trailers, with offices worldwide, including an Australian brake shoe kit production and parts warehouse in the west Melbourne suburb of Derrimut and an axle assembly facility in Sunshine, Melbourne.
With a mission to provide superior performance, energy efficiency and reliability, Meritor recognises that the trucking industry runs on tight margins and in a market of fierce competition, therefore maximising the efficiency of vehicles is paramount. To achieve this, Meritor has designed solutions that cater for the needs of owners at all stages of a vehicle’s lifecycle.
From its premium OEM quality Meritor Genuine products to the cost-effective Meritor branded range, Meritor boasts an aftermarket portfolio of axle, gear, driveline and braking products.
Of course, the key to being able to offer such a wide range in aftermarket products is securing first fitment on new models with OEM truck builders. In North America, four out of five OEMs offer Meritor as their standard driveline and it’s estimated the company holds about 70 per cent share in axle and brake solutions for the heavy commercial vehicle segment.
To meet the high expectations of OEM truck manufacturers, Meritor utilises advanced predictive techniques and innovative manufacturing processes to produce its range of air disc brakes and drum brakes, as well as drums, discs and hubs.
Meritor supplies brakes to OEMs seeking 16-inch to 25-inch wheel equipment with brake torque requirements up to 40kNm.
Its EX225 air disc range of brakes deliver superior stopping distance and durability. They are engineered for fast pad changes and only require periodic inspection, removing the need for routine maintenance schedules. With a wide variety of models for light, medium and heavy-duty applications, features include common housing assemblies to match various bridges and carriers, and modular flexibility for different requirements.
Meritor drum brakes for on- and off-highway truck and trailer, linehaul and vocational applications, meanwhile, are available in three variants: S-cam, SAC and wedge operation. Each brake design is optimised to deliver consistent performance, stopping distance and simple servicing. For vocational and service vehicles, Meritor drum brakes offer added durability and reliability.
The S-cam brakes offer industry-leading friction materials to extend the brake service life; enhanced camshaft bushings, double-anchor pin design and extended lube option to minimise maintenance and downtime; and quick-change shoes, offering fast shoe replacement. Here in Australia, the Meritor Q plus s-cam drum brake could almost be considered an industry standard and is widely used among many of the trucking world’s biggest names including Kenworth, Western Star, Isuzu, Iveco and Mack.
In addition to its brake offering, Meritor also offers both manual and automatic slack adjusters (ASA) for on-highway, linehaul and vocational applications. The ASA is built to be robust and reliable but is also the lightest in the industry, which optimises brake performance and enhances camshaft bracket life. Meritor says that this is the industry's only ASA that adjusts on chamber stroke and reduces maintenance costs by eliminating the need for frequent under-the-truck brake adjustments.
The ASA has a pull-pawl design with fewer moving parts to simplify service and enhance durability and reliability, while a fully sealed design resists contamination for longer component life. A ratchet-type adjuster mechanism minimises internal wear and maximises reliability, and its self-contained design simplifies installation and eliminates need for grounding straps.
