Kevin and Amy Plato have owned their property on Green Bay Road, on the Milwaukee River, for the last six years.

When they saw photos of shipping containers online, they decided that's what they'd use to build their new home.

"We want something that's contemporary, we want something that's different," Amy said. "It took a long time to find this. We've been searching for a home a long time, even before we bought this property and once we saw the shipping container, we were like, 'wow' and we both loved it and we knew this was something we wanted to pursue."

The 1,800-square-foot house is made of six shipping containers and takes advantage of the river views by having an open floor plan, large picture windows and a second floor cantilever bedroom that extends out into space.

"The first floor is three containers, all parallel with each other. The second floor is two containers perpendicular to those and then the sixth container is the stairway tower," Kevin said.

The Plato's said a shipping container home is for the most part just like any other house.

"The only thing that's different is that it's a steel structure and it's not made by two-by-fours, so the heating and the cooling are exactly the same," Amy said.

The Platos hired Terrance Martin as the architect and Justin Kuel at Factotum Fabricor to build the home.

The Platos broke ground in May and plan on moving into their home in September.
